What's A Good Price On A YOT Horse Lunar

I was at the flea market the other day and found an ungraded but visually proof quality year of the horse 1oz silver lunar. Since I'm a horse and I liked the coin I bought it. The tag said $29 but the dealer sold it to me for $26. They seem to be going for around 20-something on eBay. I very rarely see any of the Australian lunar series in local shops and heard it was being discontinued so I figured it might turn out to be a decent numismatic investment someday.

What's the general consensus on what these are worth and where do you think they are going in the future? I'd like to add others like the dragons and roosters to my collection, heck the complete set wouldn't be bad either. They are nice coins.

Well, FLRacingGal and I were the first two telling people about these coins - and I have a coupe of sets in 1 and 2 ounces - so I obviously believe there will be some numismatic value on these, above what I expect silver itself to do. However, I bought them because I love looking at them......personal enjoyment is the primary reason. If I have to sell one day, I will still probably keep one set.

No one knows for SURE what will hapen - but I'd say its a good bet they will go up in value.

As for what you paid - I think $20 is about average for those coins - maybe $22 with shipping. $26 is not great but also not bad.....probably less than you would have paid on eBay with shipping. The dragon and horse will run you a little more.

If you want to buy more you might check Lonestar or APMEX.

I was just checking on Lonestar after reviewing your alert thread but I didn't see any link for the lunar series, should I just email them? I wish I had been more interested in this kind of stuff a couple years ago but I was just starting out and in the bullion accumulation phase.

Anyway, my wife and I are now interested in snapping up any 2007, 08 and 09 lunars we come across along with the rest of them. I'd like a nice 5oz rooster because it reminds me a lot of my favorite RIR roo, very tame and friendly despite his size.

Yes - email her tomorrow - she probably hasn't updated her page.......and I was reading (about 4 numismatic books at once) and one author was saying - most people start in bullion and then start to get interested in other coins and their interests move them towards numimatics - I know thats how it happened with me.

The last three years (rat, ox and tiger) are all coming out at once (to catch the silver series up with the gold series which started three years earlier) and should be released in August or September.....then they will destroy all the dyes and start a new, second series of lunar coins.

5oz are nice, 10 oz nicer if you can afford 10 ounces of silver. (Kilos are even nicer but no everyone can afford 32 oz plus the premimum. My dragon might be one of my top silver favorite coins to look at!

Once these first sets are gone - in July they should release mintage numbers so we'll know more - then, in September or so, they should start the second series and we'll have a better idea of where the first series will go numismatically. I intend to hold mine for a long as I can - meaning many years, or till I drop dead! I would be willing to bet in 5 years they are worth a lot more regardless of the price of silver.

The lunars are very pretty, but I'd try to get them for more like $20-$22 or so (incl. shipping). Larger ones should cost a little less per ounce as the size increases, and sometimes you can get a decent deal if you buy the whole set. Lonestar has a pretty good price on them right now - I was actually going to just order the set yesterday, but I realized I JUST missed the free shipping special... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Also, listen to anything Master Ho says about the lunars (unless he tells you to give all yours to him!) - he's the resident expert.

As for semi-numismatic value, it's possible - they seem to be in very high demand and are some of the most (if not the most) beautiful coins around. I would expect them to at least maintain a premium over spot - although if silver spikes to $50 or $100 an ounce, I would think all bets are off and lots of stuff would go to the smelter. However, I think the safer route (with no chance of disappointment) is to buy them because you like them and intend to keep them/pass them down - buy other bullion as an investment.

Master Ho - do you know roughly how much you could expect to sell a 1 oz lunar for?? I wonder what the spreads are.

Rev121 - Have you considered giving them all to me???? I would be willing to take them off your hands.

No, I haven't considered selling them - I only know I see them go for about $22-24 on eBay before shipping.

I bought a 1-oz lunar rabbit at a coin show in Atlanta for $20 last weekend. The dealer assured me that if I put it next to another 1-oz. rabbit, I'd get 1/2 silver rabbits. I think that was false advertising, but his price was good. :D At any rate, Apmex (and probably Lonestar) seems to have the best prices, though JT Coins had even Apmex's price beaten until recently.

Maybe you bought from the same guy I did. Give it a little while before you pass judgement. I woke up to a pair of big draft horse runaways grazing on my thick pasture. I have noting bad to say about the Australian mint, but I am glad I didn't buy a year of the dragon though, might have gotten a little out of hand!

I bought a few of the dragons.........at first the house was over-run, which was bad enough.........as it is, when they mate the entire block shakes!

Then they discovered how to breath fire, taught each other and were constantly setting fire to things. ("No, no, no.........do NOT set fire to the cat!")

The knights started showing up and trying to slay them.
("No, no, no.........these are pets, get the hell off my property!")

And you don't think the knights left without wanting food?

I just thank GOD they haven't released the year of the rat!

I HATE rats!
